Along the Upper Ammonoosuc River

On Friday the White Mountain National Forest issued temporary shutdown orders closing the trailhead parking areas effectively preventing access to most of the White Mountains trails. So it would be another weekend of local hiking. My son Brandon joined me for a hike on the West Milan Trail that follows alongside the Upper Ammonoosuc River.

It was a beautiful warm day after a week of cold temps and snow. The West Milan Trail is actually a forest road that is five miles long from Spruceville Road on one end to York Pond Road on the other. There were no other cars at the end of the road and we would see no one else.

This forest road is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter. We could still see snowmobile tracks in the little bit of remaining snow. We dropped down to the river several times along the way. After hiking in for two miles we turned around and hiked back out.

It was a very easy hike and a nice day to get out for some exercise. We decided that next time we'll take the mountain bikes all the way across to York Pond Road.

Enjoy the photos and videos!

  1. Didn't even know that trail existed! It's good that you and Brandon can have quality time hiking together! I remember Brandon and Sawyer being little kids swimming at the Royalty in Gorham. My does time march on quickly!
    Thanks for sharing!
