An Afternoon of Skiing at Attitash

This was Military Appreciation weekend at both Wildcat and Attitash ski areas. Military active duty and retirees were treated to a free lift ticket on Saturday and Sunday. Having already skied Wildcat this season my son Brandon and I decided to ski Attitash.

With wind chills well below zero this morning we decided not to get an early start and departed for the ski area late morning. The temperature was 8°F and there was a steady wind blowing. Great skiing weather!

Heading up through Pinkham Notch was a wild and windy ride. The temperature was only a few degrees colder but the wind was howling. Driving by Wildcat made us glad we were on our way to Attitash. The snow was being whipped up into a frenzy by the wind over the ski slopes.

As we drove down out of the notch the wind diminished slightly and the temperature rose a couple of degrees. I parked at Bear Peak and we put on several layers before getting out of the vehicle and there was no exposed skin. A quick stop to get my free lift ticket and we were on our way to the high speed quad for a ride to the top of Bear Peak.

We skied over to Attitash and made several runs on that side of the ski area. Lift lines were non-existant and we did plenty of skiing in a couple of hours. The trail conditions were in good shape considering there has been no siginificant snow this season. There were the ocassional patches of ice but snow-making and grooming efforts were excellent.

I had to do my customary climb up the observation tower on the summit of Attitash. There was a biting breeze blowing but the sun was shining in a bright blue sky and that helped...a little. The views from the summit were spectacular!

As late afternoon approached we decided to call it a day having had our share of fresh air and sunshine. Despite the cold temps it turned out to be a great day for skiing on the slopes of Attitash!
